Week 0008:

It's not complex, but sometimes beauty doesn't have to be. Composer Christophe Heral lays down a magnificent, flowing piano melody, using it as a foundation to add on subtle but moving orchestration. The results are stellar: a rush of comfort mixed into one truly outstanding home/exploration theme.

Week 0007:

This is one of the best arranged pieces I have ever heard from one of the best arranged VGM albums out there. It is a medley of tracks from the R-Type Gallop arcade game featuring a synthesis of instruments including guitars, piano, synth and an electronic/dancey beat. An energetic and upbeat tune which slows down in the middle but picks up again in the last two minutes with the grooviest portion of music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. A funky track from a very special album!

Week 0005:

This track comes from another outstanding (and commonly overlooked) soundtrack. In my experience, you really can't appreciate the music until you hear it on its own. What we have here is a song with a very unique mood, great melody (obligatory), and high-quality electro-orchestral instrumentation. It's an excellent representation of an equally excellent soundtrack. Special thanks to Snowman for first introducing me to this song, gdog66 for being such a strong advocate of this soundtrack, and Joe Bloggs for making this great rip.

Week 0004:

An excellent arranged piece with beautiful instrumentation and great progression. I really liked the flute solos in this track. The chanting was light and brief so it was bearable. Easily the best entry this week.

Week 0003:

Everything is great: melody, rhythm, and use of instruments (e.g. the Saz). The piano, strings, and guitar in particular endow the track with a nostalgic, almost wayward quality that only adds to its polish (and is most likely befitting of its use in-game). To put it simply, this is a superior track.

Week 0002:

If you enjoyed this track, I invite you to familiarize yourself with the basis for it. Seek out game rips of the Phantasy Star series or the Sound Collection Volumes 1 and 2. Get some old school Genesis culture in ya. Thanks for participating in the Song of the Week event and keep on supporting the discussion of VGM and let it continue thriving.

Week 0001:

This track is a rather impressive mixture of symphonic and techno elements. The numerous orchestral hits serve to add even more tension and orchestral depth, and the techno beat is decent, but what really stands out is the excellent use of strings, which give the track a taught pace that slowly builds into a wonderful horn crescendo at 2:31. All of these qualities make this more than worthy of being Song of the Week.
